Frequently asked questions

  • Do they lose the golden color?
Gold plating can fade and tarnish over time, losing its initial luster and brightness.
  • How long does gold plating last?
Gold plating is meant to be permanent, but like all types of plating, it doesn’t handle rough exposure well. Gold plating wears out over time and can flake off, exposing the base metal underneath. It also loses its luster and fades with time. In general, plating can last for up to two years with proper care.
  • How do I restore gold plated jewelry?
By taking proper care of gold-plated jewelry, you can extend its life and keep it bright and beautiful. Here are some steps to take:
    • Keep gold plated jewelry away from chemicals, oils and makeup. It’s a good idea to always put on your plated jewelry last, after applying makeup, hairspray and perfumes. When doing chores, take off gold plated jewelry as the chemicals in soaps, detergents and cleaners can impact the plating.
    • It’s a good idea to keep your hands clean when handling gold plated jewelry so try to wash them before putting on and taking off your jewelry.
    • Don’t expose gold plated jewelry to chlorinated or salty water. This means taking off the jewelry before swimming in pools, hot tubs or the sea.
    • Body oils and sweat can impact gold plating. To counter this, wipe the jewelry down or clean it frequently to get rid of these pollutants.
    • Cleaning your gold-plated jewelry regularly is important to prolong its life. Use a mild liquid soap or a professional jewelry cleaning solution like this one hand warm water when doing this. Avoid any harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Avoid brushing or rubbing the plated jewelry, as this can make it flake, exposing the metal below.
    • Keep gold plated jewelry from rubbing and friction as this will cause the piece to wear down quickly and to flake off. This can happen when you layer gold plated jewelry and they rub against each other. It’s best to wear the piece of jewelry by itself.
  • How to store gold plated silver earrings?
You can take care of your gold plated jewelry by doing the following:
    • Remove gold plated jewelry before swimming or exercising – Your sweat creates a chemical reaction to gold plated jewelry just like perfume, chlorine, and nail polish. Make sure to remove your jewelry before swimming or exercising so your jewelry will not become tarnished or blemished.
    • Put on gold plated jewelry after cosmetics have been absorbed – Wait a minute or two to put on your jewelry so you can be sure that your cream or liquid makeup has dried completely. Personal care products such as lotion or cosmetics can blemish your jewelry if they come in contact with it while wet.
    • Do not spray perfume on gold plated jewelry – If you use perfume or cologne on a regular basis, spray it on your body before you put on your gold plated jewelry. Perfume and other sprays may contaminate the metal of the jewelry, making it looked blemished or stained.
    • Clean your gold plated jewelry – To clean your gold plated jewelry, mix a few drops of mild dishwashing detergent with warm water. Rinse your gold plated jewelry in the solution and allow it to air dry.
    • Buff gold plated jewelry with a microfiber cloth – After washing and drying your gold plated jewelry, buff it with a soft microfiber cloth. Over time, oil can make the gold flake off, but buffing can help minimize oils.
    • Keep gold plated jewelry in a plastic bag – When not using your gold plated jewelry, put it in a plastic bag, remove the excess air by squeezing it, and seal it. The lack of oxygen in the bag will help keep the gold plated jewelry bright and shiny. Put only one piece of jewelry per plastic bag to avoid scratching.
  • What is gold plating?

Gold plating is a process where a thin layer of gold is bonded onto a base metal. Plating is quite common in the jewelry world, with gold and rhodium being two popular types. This process was invented by an Italian chemist, Luigi Brugnatelli in 1805, the first person to plate a thin coat of gold onto silver.

Gold plating is commonly used for costume jewelry or to mimic more expensive pieces. It is almost impossible to tell apart expensive pieces of gold jewelry from inexpensive gold plated imitations.

HFK carried out carbon neutral by re-thinking our packaging box.

HFK works with worldwide suppliers to make paper recycle. We collect waste paper, sorting, pulping, and turning used paper into HFK user manual and packaging box. In near future, HFK would remove tag, and user manual out of the box, you still can download them online.

This save lots of trees, and reduces carbon emissions and avoids the mining and use of precious materials. It also shrinks the package, allowing more boxes per shipment and fewer shipments overall. We’re transitioning our manufacturing partners to renewable energy as well. Altogether, this eliminates over 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually.

Carbon savings and cruelty free are important to HFK.
